SPOILER ALERT! Studies from author Stephen Cable in his book “Cultural Captives”, show that 45%- 48% of young adults leave the church after beginning their freshmen year in college AND never return. To go right along with that alarming statistic from the National Association of Evangelicals also reported that only 5% of youth study their bible daily. With this information it is important to know that as the years go on the numbers are expected to get even worse.
I’m not one to typically use data to make a point, but I believe this needs our attention immediately. Now for the good news…these numbers can be reversed! Instead of our children continuing to rely on us for their spiritual guidance we need to lead them towards taking ownership over their own faith.
This is a step that is often neglected in the Christian home. Leading to a shaky foundation and a lack of confidence in their beliefs. A lot of times our young adults never truly learn how to seek the Lord for themselves. We must allow them a safe place to study God’s Word and to ask questions while they are still in our home. Let’s start with the foundation that all our Christian beliefs spring from, the Bible.

HOW TO MAKE A STRONG PARENT CHILD RELATIONSHIP
How to Make Picking out a Study Bible FUN?
Allow your young adult to choose their own study bible and let this be a memorable event. Here are some ways you can create a positive memory with your teen or tween.
- Build anticipation by telling your teenager you have a special day planned for just the two of you
- Plan out a full day of time spent together. Here is an example
- Pick up donuts and coffee (or hot chocolate) on the way for breakfast.
- Do some research before hand on the bookstore you are going to visit. Check to be sure they have a large selection on study bibles or bible studies for young adults.
- Choose a nice place to have lunch together afterwards where you can just chit chat about casual topics.
- Carve out some time to stop by a park or quiet place on the way home to look at the study bible together. Maybe even work through a small section together to help answer questions he or she might have.
- Once you get home talk to your teen about sharing your bible reading time together. This could be a time set where you both separately study, but you are in the same area of the home at the same time. This would help you both stay accountable and to studying daily.
Taking these intentional steps will not only create a lasting memory but, will also strengthen your bond. Having a strong relationship is the key to trust. If you truly want to lead your young teen to the Lord they need to feel close to you first. Quality time is the cornerstone for the closeness every parent and child desires. Be sure to be praying constantly for your teen as well.
