The bedroom is often considered the most important room in your house. It’s a place for rest and relaxation, and it’s also where we prepare for the day ahead. No wonder that so many people are interested in learning how to choose and design a bedroom accent wall.
Our family decided to start a DIY project with this in mind for our 13 year old teenage son. His room needed a makeover and we thought this would be a fun project to do together as a family!
Before we began we quickly realized that there are lots of things to consider when choosing an accent wall.
Here are a few tips and ideas I have learned to help you get started.

Tips and Ideas before beginning your accent bedroom wall
1. Consider the size of your room. An accent wall can make a big impact in a small space. It can also be a subtle addition to a larger room.
2. Think about the colors you want to use. Do you want your accent wall to be a different color than the other walls in your room? Or do you want the accent color to blend in?
3. Choose a material that you love. Paint is always an option, but there are also lots of other choices like wallpaper, wood paneling, or even fabric.
4. Consider the design of your room. Is there a particular style that you’re going for? Or are you just looking for something unique?
5.Think about the function of your room. Do you want your accent wall to be a focal point? Or do you want it to be more of a background element?
6. Don’t be afraid to experiment. If you’re not sure what you want, try out a few different ideas until you find something that you love.
7. Keep it simple. Your accent wall doesn’t have to be complicated. Sometimes the simplest designs are the most effective.
8. Get creative. There are no rules when it comes to designing an accent wall. So feel free to try out new ideas and experiment with different materials and colors.
Easy DIY for Accent Bedroom Wall
When our son turned 13 this past year he officially became a teenager! With his new title he had been wanting to have his friends over to our home more often.
Having his friends over has been a bit difficult in the past due to our small living space and tiny house.
Most of the time all the boys would end up taking over the living room. My husband and I would be stuck in other parts of the house the whole night. NOT an ideal situation that is for sure!
We needed to make his small bedroom more inviting and practical for hanging out. So we made the promise that this year 2022 we would do a full makeover on his room. We felt he was old enough now to make good choices when it came to picking out a style and some decorations for his room.
The overall theme he decide on was modern/contemporary. After searching around online for a while he found a picture of a DIY slat wall. He thought it looked really cool and especially liked the idea that he could make the design himself with the wood slats however he wanted.
This was a perfect way for him to express himself and get creative with this whole process.
So we went to planning!
Choosing the Right Slat Wall Display
Before we did anything our son decided on the design and the paint colors he wanted to use for his small room.
He wanted wood slats going up and down the wall vertically cut at 45 degree angles painted a darker color green.
Once this was decided we measured the full length of the wall (10 feet including the window) and chose to space each slat 5 inches apart.
This meant we needed to buy 60 feet of wood. We ended up choosing poplar wood because we know from experience that it is easy to cut and nail. It also does not require any sanding because it cuts clean almost every time.
The paint we chose was a dark color called Black Bamboo by Behr Paint.
For all the material so far we spent about $130 and some change.
Always Paint Accent Bedroom Wall First
Painting the wall before putting the wood slat up is the best way to go.
We did quite a bit of research before we attempted this project. The vast majority of people agreed that this made the whole process a lot less tedious.
Plus, the visual of the contrasting wood against the paint makes it easy to recognize if you are making a mistake in your design before its too late..
You Will Need Some Tools & Time
You will need a nail gun, measuring tape and a table saw to complete this accent bedroom wall DIY project.
We only used these THREE tools to complete this slat wall.
AND it took us only a little over two hours!
I personally thought this was wonderful considering my assumption was that it would take much longer.
You could literally get this done in a single afternoon if the wall has been painted before hand.
EVERYONE Needs a Slat Wall
After realizing what an EASY DIY home project this was we started telling friends and family that they needed to make one too!
The crazy thing is that after we had some people come see it for themselves they decided to do a slat wall in their own home.
Now what I think is GREAT about this DIY project is no two slat walls are ever exactly alike.
Walls are different sizes, the design can be however you choose and the color of paint is different. So if everyone has a slat wall in their home NO BIGGIE because they will all be unique in their own way!
A Few Things to Keep in Mind
When creating an accent wall, its a good idea to keep a few things in mind to avoid making the wrong wall the focal point of your room.
The first thing is, you’ll want to make sure that the wall you’re accenting is visible from the rest of the room. This means it shouldn’t be hidden behind furniture or other obstacles.
Second, you’ll want to consider the overall design of the room and how the accent wall will fit into that design or the room’s purpose.
For example, if you’re creating an accent wall in a modern space, you might choose to use bold colors or geometric patterns, while a traditional space may benefit from more cool colors for wallpaper designs.
Finally, you should think about the visual effect that you’re trying to achieve with your accent wall. This could be anything from creating a sense of depth and dimension in the room to highlighting an architectural feature or artwork.
By considering these factors and using your creativity, you can create a beautiful accent wall that perfectly complements your space for a fresh new look.

Ultimately, your personal style and aesthetic can help you decide which wall would look best as an accent. Typically the accent wall would be the wall you see first as you walk into the room as it is the natural focal point. For this focal wall you want to create a dramatic effect, you may want to choose a darker color choice, bright colors or wallpaper for your accent wall. If you want something more subtle, you may want to select a lighter shade or stick with a neutral color.
Can you have 2 accent walls in a bedroom?
Yes, you can have 2 or more accent walls in a bedroom. This is often done as part of a larger design scheme that includes several different patterned or textured walls throughout the space. Typically, one would be a dark accent wall painted with a darker shade than the other walls to create visual contrast and draw attention to the area. You should consider the size of the room when selecting your accent walls as too many patterns or colors can make a space feel busy and cluttered.
What is an example of an accent wall?

This wall is typically used to create visual interest or contrast and can be done with paint, wallpaper, or another type of material. The best wall for accent walls are often used as the focal point in a room and can be used to highlight architectural features or artwork. These are easy ways interior designers choose the right wall to make a great accent wall.
Can you use white as an accent wall?
Yes, white can be used as an accent wall in a room. White is often chosen for this purpose as it allows other elements of the space to stand out and provides a blank canvas for you to create your desired effect. You may want to use white in combination with another color or feature such as artwork or architectural details in order to create visual contrast. Additionally, white is a versatile color that can be used in any style of room to help achieve the desired look.
Should an accent wall have a window?
No, an accent wall does not need to have a window. This is a design element that is purely up to your personal preference. You may want to consider the overall look you are trying to achieve in the space when deciding whether or not to include a window on your accent wall. Additionally, you should take into account the amount of natural light in the room and how you want to use the space. For example, a window on an accent wall may help brighten up a dark corner of a room or provide more natural light if it is near the main living area. However, windows can also make spaces feel smaller, so you may opt against including one in your desired design. Ultimately, it is up to you to decide whether a window will help or hurt the overall look of your accent wall.
How can I create an accent wall with wallpaper?
There are several different ways that you can create an accent wall with wallpaper.
The simplest method is to simply choose a single color of stick wallpaper and apply it to the desired single wall. This can be a great way to create a perfect accent wall in a neutral room or one that already has a lot of other visual interest.
You can also choose to incorporate different patterns and textures on the walls throughout the entire room and even add some throw pillows to match the color palette. This way the accent wall can feature something more dramatic and bold. Additionally, you may want to consider using wallpaper that is slightly darker than the other walls in the room to create a more dramatic effect. Whatever method you choose, be sure to take into consideration the overall design and room feel you want and how the wallpaper will complement or contrast with the other elements in the space.
